World Environment Day is June 5!

World Environment Day is this Friday, June 5. World Environment Day celebrates positive environmental action and encourages worldwide environmental awareness. World Environment Day is celebrated in over 100 countries. It is an excellent opportunity to do something positive for the planet.

According to scientific research, if current consumption and production patters continue as they are and the population continues to rise, it is expected that by the year 2050 we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption. The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is derived from this research. The theme is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.” Consuming with care, according to the United Nations Environment Program, means to live within the boundaries of earth in order to ensure a healthy future. Human prosperity can still exist within the planetary boundaries because living sustainably means to do more and better with less. Many of the earth’s ecosystems are getting close to critical tipping points of irreversible change and now is the time for action.

World Environment Day is a time for the planet’s citizens to realize the responsibility to care for the Earth and to become agents of change. Italy is this year’s World Environment Day’s host country because they are at the forefront of global action towards improved global nutrition and resource use.

People around the world have pledged how they will celebrate World Environment Day. Some people are planting trees, upcycling old furniture, and to stop wasting food. What will you do to celebrate World Environment Day? Share with us below or on Facebook!
