For many, the meaning of Thanksgiving typically includes a four day weekend, football games, family and class reunions, a major feast and it also is the start of upcoming holiday festivities.  The first Thanksgiving was neither a holiday nor a feast but a simple gathering.  According to history when the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620, the Pilgrims had suffered the loss of 49 of their 102 colonists.  They, along with the Indians, endured a bitter winter and in the spring of 1621 yielded a bountiful harvest.  How did they celebrate?  The Pilgrims and the Indians came together and had a harvest feast that lasted three days and during these three days they united and were “thankful” to have one another – creating the first Thanksgiving.
