Children and Asthma

Most children with asthma will have symptoms before they turn 5 years old.  It can be hard for parents of young children and even doctors to recognize asthma symptoms as bronchial tubes in infants and toddlers are very small and narrow and with a cold or other illnesses can cause them to become even smaller.  Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness in children with it affecting about 7 million children in the U.S.

Some of the symptoms of pediatric asthma can range from a nagging cough that may linger or some have sudden and frightening breathing emergencies.  Some symptoms to be aware of are:

  • Coughing – especially at night
  • Wheezing or whistling sound – more pronounced when breathing out
  • Fast or troubled breathing that causes the skin around neck and ribs to gather tightly
  • Frequent colds that settle in the chest

Asthma symptoms can be triggered by exposure to an allergen like ragweed, pollen, animal dander or dust mites, air pollutants like smoke, fumes or strong odors (like bleach) and even extreme weather changes can trigger asthma.

Avoiding triggers (mentioned above), using medications (from your doctor) and keeping an eye on asthma symptoms are ways to control asthma in children of all ages.  Children with asthma (and even those who don’t) should always be kept away from sources of smoke.  Your child’s doctor should do a complete workup and provide you with a written plan along with any asthma medication that s/he may need.  As always seek the advice and supervision of your physician and always listen to your doctor’s orders.

Another added solution is the addition of an Airfree Air Purifier.  By using an Airfree Air Purifier in your child’s room and home it can also help with indoor allergens. Airfree eliminates mold, allergens, dust mites, bacteria, viruses, pollens, pet dander, tobacco, ozone and other microorganisms from the air.  Airfree’s exclusive technology works by eliminating microorganisms and allergens, destroying them in a fraction of a second. Depending on the model, between 14,000 and 20,000 liters of air pass through the Airfree device every hour, treating all the air in the room in a very short space of time.

The process works in much the same way as sterilizing water by boiling it; when water is boiled, the microorganisms it contains are eliminated. In similar fashion, Airfree continually draws in air from the room, heating it to over 400°F and instantly sterilizing it. The purified air is then cooled inside the device before being returned to the room.

The entire process is completely silent and requires no maintenance, not even the occasional replacement of parts. All you have to do is switch the device on and leave it to get on with the job!

While asthma can’t be cured it CAN BE helped.
