Dangers of Mold Exposure

Mold can be found indoors and outdoors and are present year round – there are so many species of fungi that exist that no one truly knows how many types there are.  Mold grows best in warm, damp and humid conditions and spread/reproduce by making spores.  Some people  are sensitive to molds.  People who are exposed can experience symptoms such as eye and skin irritation, wheezing, and nasal stuffiness. Then there are some people with serious allergies to mold and have more severe reactions that can include fever and shortness of breath.  People with lung illnesses can also develop mold infections in their lungs.

Indoor molds are found where humidity levels are high like a basement or your shower and bathroom. Mold can also be found at your place of employment without you even knowing it is there until you experience symptoms. Other less commonly thought places with high mold exposures are – greenhouses, saunas, farms, mills, summer cottage/homes, antique shops, florists and even in libraries.

The best ways to decrease mold exposure is to avoid areas that are likely to have mold.  This isn’t easy when it comes to being in your home!  If there is mold growth in your home you should clean it by using soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than a cup of laundry bleach with one gallon of water.  You can also purchase commercial products and use as suggested.  Once cleaned you can slow the growth of mold mycontrolling humidity levels and properly venting your bathroom/shower and kitchen cooking areas.
