World Allergy Day

07.07 - Dia Mundial da Alergia_

Saturday, July 8th is World Allergy Day – this day is meant to globally increase awareness of allergies and their impact.  On World Allergy Day, people are urged to learn about allergy symptoms, learn about foods that contain allergies, learn how to improve their environment to lessen allergic reactions or to avoid them and learn to recognize allergic reactions in order to prevent dangerous consequences.

We would like to reiterate some facts regarding allergies.  Allergies are a result of something you ate, something you inhaled into your lungs, or something that you may have touched or that may have touched your body.  An allergic reaction is the way your body reacts to the foreign substance, which is called an allergen.  Allergies affect roughly 30% of adults and 40% children and is increasing.  Allergic disease, including asthma, is the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S. for people of all ages.  For children under 18 years old, it is the 3rd most common chronic disease.  Some of the reactions that you can experience from an allergic reaction are:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose
  • Blocked nose
  • Itchy nose
  • Itchy eyes
  • Scratchy throat

In some severe cases, it can cause hives, a rash, issues with your blood pressure, trouble with breathing, asthma attacks and even death.  One of the best ways to avoid allergies is to avoid them the best that you can, however that isn’t always ideal.
