Spring Cleaning: Mold and Mildew Be Gone!

Mold and mildew are a couple of those pesky things that occur in everyone’s home but no one really likes to talk about.

Mold often grows in bathrooms as the area is usually warm and humid – two things that it thrives on. Black mold can also occur in kitchens and laundry areas.  Depending on where the mold is growing can determine how you should get rid of it. If mold is growing on clothes, apply vinegar and detergent when washing. When mold grows on a painted wall put mild detergent on a wet rag and wash it off. If mold is present in grout, make spray a mixture of one part vinegar and one part water on the area. Use an old toothbrush to scrub in circular motions. Then make a paste of baking soda and water, apply and repeat the scrubbing method. usa001

Mildew is common in households and usually occurs in fabrics and books. When it comes to towels, wash your load of towels on the hot cycle and add 1 cup of vinegar to the load. Do not use detergent or anything because it can be dangerous. Run the wash. Then, if you still smell a little bit, rewash with just hot water and 1/2 cup of baking soda. When your towels are done, throw them in the dryer with a dryer sheet.

Books that were once wet or damp tend to grow mildew. Place a cup of baking soda into a plastic box or bin. Place the book or books (this method is great for more than one book) inside and seal the lid well. Leave for 48-72 hours, then check. Repeat until the odor has gone.

The key to mold is to tackle it as soon as you first spot it. Keep all areas of your home well ventilated, insulated and dry. If surfaces are heavily mold or mildew infested, it may be best to consider completely getting rid of the items.
