Summer air quality

If you reside in a city, you may have noticed that when the temperatures start to rise the quality of the air you breathe declines and severe air quality alerts pop up overnight.

The formation of ozone increases during sunny weather with warm temperatures, especially when there are certain pollutants already present.

These pollutants are often found in cities which is why they are usually the first places that get air quality alerts. These pollutants also travel to and affect rural areas as well.

Even though summer has just officially started we have been seeing air alerts around the country. These alerts have already started to reach unhealthy levels with cities advising citizens not to drive alone, refuel cars in the evening, and put off lawn care until improvement begins, along with other instructions.

Poor air quality does not only affect the elderly and children, it can affect anyone and everyone. It is important to heed these cautions and take them seriously.

Ground level ozone causes shortness of breath, cough, sore throat, lung inflammation and even permanent scar lung tissue. Due to its high ability to cause airway inflammation, it aggravates asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.
